Heard it through the grape #vine

You’ve probably heard about Twitter’s new video-sharing service, Vine. The app, which is now available to download for iPhone, replicates the short and sweet nature of the micro-blogging network. We’ve been having a play around with it at TMG Towers and having watched others 6 second video contributions we’re now convinced that this is a pretty exciting development for social media.

Creativity thrives with constraints. It’s the unique selling point behind Twitter’s success. Where other social networks allow you to rant and rave until the cows come home, Twitter (should) make you tweet only the important details. Now Vine will encourage people to work within the channel’s constraints to produce clever videos that make the very best of a 6 second moving image.

Here’s a few of our favourites so far…Oh and you can click here to watch the full McLaren MP4-12C review:

Video: Jenson and Lewis build their F1 car

Button and Hamilton build their F1 car

We’ve all been there. A trip to your local Swedish furniture store means an afternoon of bits that don’t want to connect to each other and more than likely a pile of bolts left over at the end. We get bored; make a cuppa and start messing about.

And it’s good to see Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton are no different. Continue reading

I have a dream…

McLaren MP4-12C

Beached Bugatti: Car-ma?

Ouch

The sight of a marooned Bugatti Veyron in a saltwater lagoon in Texas was enough to get us reaching for the Kleenex (steady).

A car of such magnitude deserved a better life than that, perhaps spent rifling around five-star hotels transporting A-list Hollywood celebrities, or being driven (legally) at its 253mph top speed to show the puny earth cars what speed really is.

Is the big Bug’ the baddest?

I fear this one may get heated…
The Veyron is – we reckon – the world’s most famous hypercar. Its rise to fame was partly due to the ambition of VW’s head honcho when he wanted to build the fastest car in the world.
Then it got delayed. Then it got development problems. Somewhere along the line the brakes didn’t stop the car properly – worrying when you’ve got 1,001 horses trying to escape.
Even the frickin’ gearbox took FIFTY engineers FIVE years to perfect. Yes, I’ve capitalised those words because they are extraordinary figures, for quite an extraordinary car.
When the big Bug’ finally landed, it was a technological tour-de-force of outright grunt and power. It could stop from 253mph to zero in just ten seconds. Its 8-litre engine managed to accelerate the Veyron’s 2.2 tonne weight to 62mph in 2.5 seconds – that’s motorbike quick.
There’s not much to touch it – but is it a proper bad-boy?
The Koenigsegg CCX offers similar ludicrous performance but brings the vital ingredient of violence to the party – the next time you drive could very well be your last if you’re not careful…
Then there’s the SSC Ultimate Aero – a 250mph+ motor which looks otherwordly. The Pagani Zonda gets big love in our books because of its outlandish style, glorious highly-stressed V12 engine and its charisma.
The Gumpert Apollo? Well, it’s dog-ugly but at least it’s got character. And 800bhp in a shell which weighs less than a Ford Fiesta.
We saw on Top Gear that the Veyron had a hard time keeping up with the ten-year old McLaren F1 off the line, but came back with a slug of horsepower to win the epic battle. But even former racing driver Tiff Needell told us he’d prefer the McLaren because it’s “got some soul”.
Then there’s the Lamborghini Murcielago LP670-SV – the finest Lambo to date. You don’t need the power or performance figures…because it’s a Lamborghini.
If this were a house party, we reckon the Koenigsegg would be the demented James Bond villain in a lab coat; the Gumpert Apollo the ex-convict; the Pagani Zonda a flashy footballer with a penchant for on-pitch fouling; the McLaren F1 a heavyweight champion with a heart of gold, and the Lambo a cage-fighter, pure and simple.
But would the Veyron be the quiet, unassuming accountant in the corner?
An accountant?

An accountant?

I fear this one may get heated…

Bugatti Veyron: still not cooler than a McLaren F1

Bugatti Veyron

Bugatti Veyron

Another new Bugatti Veyron edition has been spotted – a very shiny model modified by Mansory that’s on sale in the United Arab Emirates.

The Veyron’s awesome capabilities are well-known: its W16 engine pumps out more than 1,000bhp, propelling the car beyond 250mph. The SSC Ultimate Aero may have stolen its crown as world’s fastest production car, but the Veyron combines its outrageous performance with an elegance that other supercars cannot muster.

But does that make it cool? Not for me – I reckon the McLaren F1 is still the all-time coolest supercar. Here’s why. Continue reading

Can Lewis Hamilton win the 2008 F1 championship?

Hamilton

Lewis Hamilton came within a single point of winning the F1 title last year. Can the McLaren driver win the title this season?

His McLaren has looked quick in pre-season testing – Hamilton topped the times on two of the three days of testing in Spain last week. But rivals Ferrari and world champion Kimi Raikkonen have looked every bit as quick – and many people think they’re actually quicker. Continue reading

Hamilton denied F1 title on technicality

Lewis Hamilton

Should Lewis Hamilton have been the Formula 1 world champion this year?

His McLaren team certainly think so, but the FIA (F1’s governing body) threw out an appeal on Friday which could have made Hamilton the 2007 world champion.

McLaren had appealed three cars which finished in front of Hamilton, claiming they used illegally-cool fuel in the final race in Brazil. Continue reading
